Introducing Equestrian's New Membership Structure

Equestrian Australia’s Chairman, Dr Warwick Vale, said the change is about providing consistency within the sport and attracting new members.

Equestrian Queensland Chair Peter Toft said this is a great outcome for the sport and one that has been years in the making.

“All the states have worked together to bring about this change that has been a long time in the making.

“For our existing individual members we don’t see a huge change in terms of your competition access.  But what this new structure will allow us to do is attract new members in the participation and support categories, to broaden our base,” said Peter.

Event Organisers - want to know how the changes affect you?  CLICK HERE Please do not hesitate to contact us - workshops will be held in Queensland in August and October for Event Organisers to attend.  There is no requirement in Queensland to introduce the competition structure until 1 January 2014, but should event organisers wish to trial this at any time prior to that date, they are more than welcome to do so.

EA today confirmed the four member team that will contest the June 6-9 event will include rookies Evie Buller (Yalambi Landor) of Western Australia and Queensland’s Olivia Hamood (GH Eternal Flame) as well as past Nations Cup representatives Alison Rowland (Bickley Brook Bella) and Rory Hovell (Val D’lsere). National Performance Director for Jumping Annie Lever will accompany the team as Chef d’Equipe.

While it won’t be their first time representing Australia - Evie was a member of the 2012 Trans-Tasman team and Hamood a member of the Australian team which competed at the 2009 Youth Olympic Festival – it will be the first time both will step-up to the plate in a Nations Cup event.

As well as gaining experience from competing alongside accomplished riders, the duo will benefit from a training clinic facilitated by Australia’s international jumping coach Gilbert Boeckmann, who will provide training and support for the entire team leading into the event, as well as throughout the competition.

“This Australian team will be strongly positioned to take on the Lisbon Nations Cup event after training with one of the world’s leading jumping coaches in Gilbert Boeckmann.

“The time spent with Gilbert leading into the event will also give the four elite squad riders a chance to work on their training and competition goals as well as work in consultation with the High Performance team to develop a 12 month plan which will involve sessions with Gilbert,” said National Performance Director for Jumping, Annie Lever.

Australian based elite squad riders will have an opportunity to work with Gilbert later in the year.

Investigations continuing into Australian bat lyssavirus case

Biosecurity Queensland is continuing its investigation after a horse tested positive to Australian bat lyssavirus (ABLV) infection in the Southern Downs.

Chief Biosecurity Officer Jim Thompson said biosecurity officers had been on the property over the weekend assessing the situation. There are other companion animals remaining on the property including horses.

“None of the remaining animals have shown any signs of unusual behaviour or illness recently,” Dr Thompson said.

“Officers have also started assessing the location of microbat and other bat colonies, including flying foxes, in the area.

“Microbats, including a dead bat had been observed on the property, but not in close association with the horses. All Australian bat species are considered susceptible to ABLV.

“Owners are advised to take all reasonable steps to keep their animals away from bats. It is also important to ensure sound hygiene and biosecurity measures are routinely adopted for all contact with horses, their blood and body fluids and associated equipment.”

Chief veterinary officers from each state are due to meet tomorrow to discuss last week’s test results.

“As we haven’t seen this disease in horses before, this group will provide guidance and advice on further disease management requirements including quarantine restrictions for the property, and other measures that may need to be put in place.”

Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young said Queensland Health has identified eight human contacts of the sick horses and remains available to assist with any further enquiries about exposure.

"As a result of this contact tracing, seven people have been offered a course of treatment which prevents Lyssavirus in humans," Dr Young said.

"The recommended course of treatment must be administered in a timely manner and comprises rabies immunoglobulin and rabies vaccine.

"One other person was deemed to have had such a low exposure to the horse that preventative treatment was not required.

"There is no test available for Lyssavirus before symptoms appear."

ANZ Introducer Program

In an effort to further broaden the sports income base we have been in discussions with Kerrry Higgins, ANZ mobile lender, regarding their Introducer Programs.  We have also approached NAB and are currently in discussions with them also.

This is a referral program, whereby members identify themselves to Kerry, regarding their membership with Equestrian Queensland.  In turn, Equestrian Queensland will receive a fee when loans are drawn down.

Horse confirmed with lyssavirus

Biosecurity Queensland is quarantining a property on the Southern Downs after a horse tested positive to Australian Bat Lyssavirus (ABLV).

Chief Biosecurity officer Dr Jim Thompson said the horse was euthanased on 11 May after falling ill.

“It tested negative for Hendra virus infection but further testing returned a positive result for ABLV,” he said.

“Another horse showing similar symptoms was euthanased at the same property five days earlier.

“There are 20 other horses on the property. The vet involved in both cases used PPE and took appropriate precautions.

“The site will remain under quarantine while further testing is conducted on the remaining horses.

“ABLV is carried by bats and flying foxes.”

Staff from the Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service Public Health Unit will visit this property to assess the situation and identify any human potentially exposed to this horse.

The public health staff will interview all people identified as having been in contact with the horse to determine whether any post-exposure treatment is required.

Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young said it is important to remember that human cases of Lyssavirus are incredibly rare.

“There have only been three recorded cases in Australia, all in Queensland, and sadly, all three people passed away,” Dr Young said.

“All three cases were the result of direct exposure to bats with Lyssavirus. This is the first case where Australian Bat lyssavirus has been identified in a horse, although we know from overseas that horses can be infected with rabies. There is a theoretical possibility that transmission to humans could occur.

“We do however have a preventative treatment that is effective in any person not displaying symptoms of the virus.

“Warwick and Toowoomba Hospitals will provide a free course of this preventative treatment to anyone who public health staff determine was in close contact with this dead horse resulting in a risk of exposure to the virus. Simply patting a horse would not constitute exposure.”

People who have had a potential exposure to ABLV require an injection of rabies immunoglobulin and a series of four rabies vaccine injections.

Anyone with a weakened immune system will require a further (fifth) dose of vaccine and follow up blood tests to confirm their immunity.

This course of treatment is also known as post-exposure prophylaxis.

Any Darling Downs local who believes they have been in direct contact with, or in close proximity to this horse, can also contact 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84) for advice.

Staff at 13 HEALTH will help determine whether any further action, including testing or treatment, is required.

New information on the Hendra virus vaccine available

Biosecurity Queensland is urging horse owners to be aware of new advice regarding the Hendra virus vaccine.

Chief Biosecurity Officer Dr Jim Thompson said recent data evaluated by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority showed that the vaccine offered protection to horses for a period of up to six months.

"Research is continuing to determine if the vaccine will provide protection against Hendra virus for up to 12 months," he said.

"Changes have also been made around the timing of the second dose. When the vaccine was first made available late last year there were strict requirements on the timing of the second vaccination. Further research means that the second dose can now be administered anytime between three to six weeks after the first dose.

"Vaccination is the single most effective way to reduce the risk of Hendra virus infection in horses and Biosecurity Queensland encourages horse owners to have their horses vaccinated.

"However horse owners shouldn't become complacent, even after vaccination. We still recommend the use of good personal hygiene and biosecurity measures when working with horses, regardless of their vaccination status."

Horse owners should discuss vaccination with their veterinarian, and they should familiarise themselves with other measures to reduce the risk of Hendra virus infection in Biosecurity Queensland's updated "Information for Horse Owners Pack" at www.biosecurity.qld.gov.au

Steps to reducing the risk of Hendra virus:

• Talk to your veterinarian about vaccinating your horse against Hendra virus.
• Horse feed and water containers should be removed from under trees. If possible, place feed and water containers under a shelter.
• Owners should inspect and identify flowering/fruiting trees on their property. Horses should be removed from paddocks where flowering/fruiting trees are attracting flying foxes. Horses should be returned only after the trees have stopped flowering/fruiting and the flying foxes have gone. If horses cannot be removed from the paddock, consider fencing (temporary or permanent) to restrict access to flowering/ fruiting trees. Clean up any fruit debris underneath the trees before returning horses.
• If it is not possible to remove horses from paddocks, try to temporarily remove your horses during times of peak flying fox activity (usually at dusk and during the night).
• Ensure that sick horses are isolated from other horses, people and animals until a veterinarian's opinion is obtained.
• If there is more than one horse on your property, handle unaffected horses first and then only handle sick horses after taking appropriate precautions.
• Make sure gear exposed to any body fluids from horses is cleaned and disinfected before it is used on another horse. This includes halters, lead ropes and twitches. Talk to your veterinarian about which cleaning agents and disinfectants to use.
• When cleaning contaminated equipment from a sick horse, wear gloves, cover any cuts or grazes and wash your hands thoroughly afterwards.
• It is essential that horse owners practise good biosecurity and not travel with, work on or take sick horses to other properties or equestrian events. Do not allow visiting horse practitioners (e.g. farriers) to work on sick horses.
• Seek veterinary advice before bringing any sick horse onto your property.

The Qld Horse Council stresses the need to be aware that Hendra virus can occur wherever there are flying foxes and horses, and because of the large area that flying foxes travel over, can occur across a large proportion of the state and at any time of the year. Media Release - All ages shine in open classes at FTP ODE

The weather was schizophrenic. Raining one minute, sunny the next, and after wet weather forced the cancellation of the last event, no one could blame the committee for being on their toes. Fortunately the ground held up well and nothing could deter the resolve of the 180 riders who turned out to compete.

The 1* course was taken out by Alison Denney on her horse Wilbrforce. She’s part of the newly formed group closer to the finish for the over 50s.

The open classes proved no worry for the younger competitors, many of whom outshone the more experienced riders. The Junior riders dominated in the open EVA105, with Madison Simpson and Laura Bell taking out first and second place respectively leaving adult rider Shane Eden to collect third.  Junior rider Isabel English proved she’s still one to watch and picked up first and third place in the EVA95cm. Elanor Lovett who placed second was also a junior.

In a bid to keep the Fig Tree Pocket cross country course fresh there were new jumps and many of the portable jumps were moved to a new location. Unfortunately this proved the undoing for many unsuspecting riders, according to Club President Deb Postle.

“When the cross country jump analysis came through I was surprised by the number of riders who were caught out by the new or newly placed jumps..

“The other thing that seemed to catch people were changes to the cross country rules, so I’d encourage all riders to attend the steward briefing at the next event or spend a few minutes brushing up on the rules,”

The club’s next event is 9 weeks time on 13^th & 14^th of July.

1. I am an EA Member and I would like to know if my horse was to escape and injure someone who was passing my property and I was sued, would I be covered?

Yes, as a horse owner you would be covered if your horse injured someone regardless of where the incident occurred. It is, however your responsibility to keep your horse secure and safe at all times, but in the case where a horse gets out and causes an injury to a another person, your Public Liability insurance will cover legal claims made against you. Obviously, in order to claim on the Liability policy, you would need to be found legally liable for the incident and comply with the terms and conditions of the policy

2. I am an EA Member and I own a property with a Dressage Arena. Coaches often ask me if they can hire my property for a fee to give lessons on the property. Am I covered for this?

No, your EA membership is in place to cover you for your non-income earning equestrian activities. This includes, but is not limited to, riding and handling horses. If you own a property with facilities for which you receive a fee to hire out to others, this would be deemed an income earning activity and you would require separate insurance. Some farm policies would extend to cover this activity, however you should be very careful to check that it does provide you with that cover because some insurers specifically exclude all horse-related activities, or only horse riding/training, from their policy. Some people are unaware that their policy contains this exclusion. If your property insurance does not provide you with cover for facility hire or any of your other horse activities, Gow-Gates can arrange a policy which will ensure you are fully covered.

3. Does my EA Membership cover my own horse if it was to get injured?

No, your EA Membership does not cover injury or death to your horse. This is a completely different insurance policy which can be arranged through Gow-Gates. Being an EA member allows you to take advantage of discounted premiums made available by Gow-Gates as a National Partner of EA. In addition to the Mortality/Theft cover which forms the basis for the policy, there are various different options you can choose to suit your needs such as Loss of Use, Veterinary Fees, Life Saving Surgical Fees, etc.

4. I am an EA member. Does my insurance through the EA Membership cover me whilst going on a trail ride with my friends?

Yes, your EA membership will provide you with both Personal Accident insurance (if you are injured) and your Public Liability insurance (if your horse injures someone else or causes third party property damage) whilst going on a trail ride with your friends.

5. As an EA member, if I am injured whilst riding at an event and an ambulance is required to take me to hospital, but I am discharged from the emergency department shortly after, what costs are covered by my EA insurance?

The Personal Accident insurance provided as part of your EA membership will cover 85% of the ambulance cost (after any reimbursement from your Private Health fund) and any other medical expenses which are not either partly or fully payable by Medicare.

Biosecurity Queensland introduces Electronic WayBill

Biosecurity Queensland is introducing an electronic waybill to improve accessibility to services and reduce associated costs for livestock owners. The development of an electronic waybill that can be completed online and produce a unique identifier (waybill number) has taken a considerable amount of time and it is anticipated that this service will be available by 30 June 2013. 

The Stock Act 1915 requires that a completed waybill must accompany travelling stock. 

The waybill identifies the owner of the stock and provides details of the movement.  Its primary use is as a record of movement that may be used to trace stock. A waybill needs to be retained for two years after the waybill is completed.

The current Move Easy waybill system which allows certain persons to write their own waybill has been in place since 1994.

The horse industry is currently the main user of the Move Easy waybill. Current legislation requires a waybill to be completed for horse movements when:

• moving a horse out of the cattle tick infected zone
• there is a change of ownership, i.e. selling or buying a horse, including sending for slaughter
• a travel permit has been issued for the movement.

The benefits of an electronic waybill align with the red tape reduction strategy of the Queensland Government and include:

• increased accessibility for clients on demand
• cost savings by removing the requirement to purchase waybill books and reduction in associated administration and printing costs
• ability to electronically store movement records

The electronic waybill will be available online through the Australian Business Account website.

Hard copy waybills will continue to be made available for those clients who do not have access to the internet or email.

The Grand Prix Horse of the Year will receive a Stubben Zaria Deluxe Jumping Saddle valued at $3650.00 and the Leading Young Rider will receive a choice of either a $500.00 voucher for Sandale Saddlery or a Stubben Bridle valued at $500.00.

The 2013 Series is about to get a great jump start at the Grand Weekend on the Sunshine Coast. Our first round is the Stubben Classic Grand Prix to be run on Saturday Night. Always a super class with a very enthusiastic crowd and a big money Calcutta.

This year we have ten rounds including some of Queensland’s most prestigious and big purse Grand Prix & World Cup Classes. The winner will ultimately be the most competitive and consistent horse throughout the whole season.

The series will be conducted over 11 shows with the best 8 results contributing to the final score. Points will be awarded from first to 10^th place. With first place gaining 10 points and 10^th place gaining 1 point.

CDG have rescheduled their official 1* event to 10 and 11 August.

Caboolture Dressage have rescheduled their official 1* event that was washed out in April. The new date is the 10^th and 11^th August.

Riders are requested to let Karen Herald know if they want a refund or are happy to have their entries carried over to the new date.

A new closing date of 19^th July has been set and the schedule will be opened after the closing date for our 2* championship event to avoid confusion.

New entries will be taken to fill scratchings & withdrawals only.

Advanced and FEI competitions will be held on Saturday 10^th August in the outdoor arenas and all other competitions will run on Sunday 11^th August.

Statement from the Board of Equestrian Queensland on Hendra Vaccinations

HENDRA VIRUS VACCINATIONS

At its monthly meeting, on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 the Board of Equestrian Qld discussed further its position on vaccinations as it relates to the Hendra virus.

The Board reaffirmed its current position in relation to voluntary vaccination and will continue to ensure all information related to Hendra and the associated vaccine, is provided to members in a timely manner so they may discuss their particular circumstance with their private Vets.

The EQ Board would encourage all member clubs to adopt this position as outlined above, until such time they are otherwise advised.  We do not in any way support compulsory directives in relation to this matter.  This should always remain a decision for the horse owner and their respective veterinarian.

The EQ position will remain unaltered until such time an alternative approach is recommended by Biosecurity Qld or Qld Health, based on the body of evidence available at that time.

Changes to the EA Trainee Insurance Conditions

Currently Introductory Coach Trainees are able to undertake their training independently of a CE and only meet with CE’s in order to get assessed.
It was felt by the committee that this was not appropriate educationally and that candidates training independently were not benefiting from having a
mentor help them identify what they might be doing wrong, and providing input to improve their training.

    The Trainee Insurance package  will be changed from 1 October 2013 so that during their
    preparation to accredit as an Introductory Coach,  
    
    Trainees must:

    1) complete all their coach training under the direct supervision of a Coach Educator

    2) trainees will not be able to accept payment for any sessions whilst they are a trainee.

    The current Trainee Insurance Policy valid from 1 Oct 2012 – 30 Sept 2013 is still effective until
    the new policy will be introduced at the next renewal.

    The committee is also aware that the new policy may impact some Trainees located in areas with
    restrictions to access CEs. This is not taken lightly and those candidates who maybe effected
    should contact the National Office to discuss personal options for meeting these new
    requirements.

Show Horse Queensland Newcomer of the Year - Postponed

2013 EQ Newcomer Postponed

After lengthy discussions at our recent committee meeting we would like to announce that the 2013 EQ Newcomer Show will be postponed due to lack of entries, making it unviable to hold at this time from both an EQ perspective, as well as the competitors.

As mentioned, this show has only been postponed and as such we will now be combining our Horse of the Year in October with our Newcomer Show.  This show will be held over the October long weekend Saturday 5th October - Monday 7th October, at the Gatton Show Grounds.

EQ Showhorse are very happy to refund your entry or carry these over to our Horse of the Year/Newcomer Show.  We will follow up with you regarding our wishes in relation to this.

We believe we can make the joint shows a wonderful show horse spectacular, culminating both our rising stars, Open Show horses and Show hunters.  We sincerely regret any inconvenience this decision has caused but hope to offer all an exciting show in October.

New Hendra virus case confirmed in North Queensland

Biosecurity Queensland is managing a new Hendra virus case in the Tablelands area after a positive test result was received late last night. 

Queensland Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Rick Symons said one horse had died on the property after becoming unwell over the weekend.

Biosecurity Queensland is in the process of quarantining the property. There are other horses on the property and we will be working to determine what contact the infected horse had with these other animals, Dr Symons said.

Testing and monitoring will then be undertaken over the next month.

While under quarantine, restrictions will apply to moving horses and horse materials on and off the infected property.

An initial assessment from Queensland Health's Public Health Unit in Cairns has identified four people who had contact with the infected horse.

Public health staff are now interviewing these people to determine whether any testing or treatment is required. All four people are thought to have had a low level of exposure to the infected horse.

Queensland's Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young reassured the community that transmission of the virus required close contact with body fluids of the sick horse.
 
"There is no evidence the virus can be passed directly from flying foxes to humans, from the environment to humans, from humans to horses, or can be transmitted by airborne droplets," Dr Young said.
 
"Anyone who is concerned should contact 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84).
 
"We stand ready to provide any assistance, counselling, information, testing or treatment that may be required."

Dr Symons said this was the second case of Hendra virus in Queensland this year.

"Even though the majority of cases tend to occur in the cooler months between July and September, we have consistently said that Hendra virus infection can occur throughout the year, he said.

It is therefore important for horse owners to take steps to protect themselves and their animals year round.

"A Hendra virus vaccine for horses is also now available and it is recommended that horse owners discuss with their veterinarian whether vaccinating their horses is appropriate."

Ready Set Trot - How To Get Started

Ready Set Trot is a junior participation program for children with an interest in horses but don’t have one of their own. Aimed at children aged 5-12 years old, the program offers a variety of ways young people can get involved in equestrian regardless of whether they own a horse.

Ready Set Trot aims to introduce young people to horses and provide them with a better understanding of horsemanship in a fun and exciting way – regardless if they have access to a horse or not. Ready Set Trot will teach the fundamentals of horsemanship introduce young people to the many various areas of the horse industry and aim to instil in them a lifelong passion for horses.

Ready Set Trot consists of two types of program – Ready Set Trot- Playground Skills and Ready Set Trot- Stable Skills 

Ready Set Trot- Playground Skills – provides young people with an introduction to horses through a series of free games and activities. It is the most accessible way to dip a hoof into the horse world and has been designed especially for school teachers, after-school carers, parents and club coaches. Ready Set Trot - Playground Skills requires minimal resources so it can be delivered anywhere, anytime. By using the imagination of children to link horses to everyday play, children are acquainted with a basic understanding of the horse world

Ready Set Trot- Stable Skills – introduces children to the fundamentals of horsemanship and the basic elements of horse riding. The eight week group program, delivered by a local accredited delivery centre, provides participants with the opportunity to learn about basic horse welfare and the fundamentals of horse riding. Ready Set Trot - Stable Skills is the perfect opportunity for horse mad kids toget involved in the horse world.
